Groupware Essay -- science
Groupware A powerful requirement for businesses to effectively compete in todayââ¬â¢s global market place is the ability for collaboration between business units, work teams and individuals. The value of collaboration is its potential to contribute toward increasing productivity, reducing costs, growing profit and improve service or product quality (Alavi, M., 1994). Technology that has been designed to support collaborative group work is referred to as groupware. This impacts on the way people communicate with each other, the way people work and even the structure of an organization. Groupware are technology based tools that facilitate groups of geographically dispersed people to share knowledge and information using computer based resources (Dennis et al., 1996). These tools allow humans to collaborate on projects where members may contribute directly or anonymously (Nunamaker et al., 1991). Groupware includes the ability to send and receive data, emails, share personal calendars, hold video conferencing and workflow management (Kilmer, 1999). Kilmer, (1999 ) states that popular products that fit into this category include Lotus Notes, email, intranet, internet, electronic conferencing and other collaborative tools. Groupware allows for new organizational design and practices. It provides new potential for how work groups or teams can enhance their coordination when performing activities and assigned tasks. Groupware technology addresses the need for collaboration, human to human interaction and builds on the latest advances in information technology. The rapid development of groupware technology means the term is not clearly defined (Lloyd, P. 1994), essentially the term refers to any computer based technology that helps a group work better collaboratively over digital media (Lloyd, P. 1994). According to Ellis et al., (1991) groupware falls into many categories from simple to complex systems. Ellis et al., (1991), distinguish two main categories when viewing groupware; time space and application level categories. Time space groupware are those tools conceived to enhance communication and collaboration within a real time interaction. The scenarios which encompass this include same time/same place, same time/different place, different time/same place and different time/different place (Ellis et al., 1991). Evaluate Thomas Jefferson Presidency
The election of 1800 was a tight race and a tie broken by the House of Representatives, led to the election of Thomas Jefferson as the third president of the United States. Thomas Jefferson was in office as president for two terms, serving from 1801-1809. As a whole, Thomas Jefferson had a very positive presidency even though there were a few setbacks throughout. There were many significant events that happened during these eight years and the most well known would be: the Louisiana Purchase, the undeclared Barbary War, and the trade acts imposed due to problems with France and Britain .All great things must come to an end and Jefferson was succeeded by John Adams. America is a superpower and Thomas Jefferson was a great impact to all that as been accomplished as a nation. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803, was the greatest accomplishment of Jefferson in his presidency. The French under Napoleon had a great deal of economic problems already and maintaining the land in the west was a lot to handle so they sold it to the United States. In addition, France was fighting Britain and they needed more money and they wanted to only sell New Orleans at first, but ended up selling the whole territory (Henretta). At the time they sold this territory for 15 million dollars which ended up being about two cents an acre(Holmes). This purchase was very positive because this territory doubled the United States territory and this was great for them in order with westward expansion and exploration of the west. This expansion led to Lewis and Clark to explore the new lands. They were sent to experience the plants, animals, geography, and to learn how this region could be exploited economically. Without Jefferson in power, this expedition that they set out on may not have been accomplished and the United States may have not been so advanced at this time.At the time of the purchase, buying it was deemed unconstitutional but Thomas Jefferson went through with it anyway. The purpose at th e time was to get French out of this region all together to protect our trade on the port of New Orleans. Also, it was to protect the free passage along the Mississippi River. Not only was this one of the greatest accomplishments of Thomas Jefferson's presidency, but may have been one of the greatest events in America's history. During Thomas Jeffersonââ¬â¢s presidency another event that is very significant would be the undeclared Barbary Wars.During this time, a reason this is so remembered, Jefferson was spending a lot of the countryââ¬â¢s money. The Barbary States were off of North Africa and leading up to this undeclared war, they were seizing the international ships and holding the crews hostage for ransom money. At the time, he wanted to avoid all out war which would increase taxes and national debt which at this point he was very right (Henretta). This was particularly dangerous for the country because at the time there was not a strong navy.Merchants were in danger eve ry time they went out on the water. As a nation, the United States defeated the Barbary States and that led to not paying the Barbary people money. These tensions may have been negative during the time, but as we look back on history, Jefferson did the right thing for the country and him defeating these pirates really reflects on his presidency being very positive for the United States. Lastly, major trade problems with Britain and France and relationships were very important to Jeffersonââ¬â¢s presidency. With all of these problems many acts were passed in order to relive the tension. The United States wanted to be neutral during problems between Britain and France, but somehow always ended up right in the middle. One of the first acts that was imposed was the Nonintercourse Act(1806), and that halted importation of British products. This did little to no harm to the British so in 1809 trade with Britain was reopened. Another act that was imposed on America was the Embargo Act wh ich prohibited all trade and this really hurt New England the most. This hurt New Englanders so much that it caused many of them to side with Pinckney in the 1808 election. Even though some may have sided, John Adams won the election and succeeded Thomas Jefferson. This was a rough patch to his presidency, but despite the few foreign affairs he did a great job with dealing with France and Britain during these times. Thomas Jefferson was one of the very first presidents of the United States and his presidency is one of many that have made America the super power that it is.Each president that lasts the full two terms must have been liked by many to stay in the office for eight years so he definitely did something right. Jefferson purchased territory that nearly doubled Americaââ¬â¢s size, defeated the Barbary pirates in ââ¬Å"undeclared warâ⬠, and although there were many foreign affairs during this time he handled them very well. He is one that is remembered and will continu e to be remembered through time for all of the positive things he accomplished. Thomas Jefferson had a very positive presidency and in eight years did a lot for Americans and has been apart of shaping the nation.

The Wealth Of Nations By Adam Smith - 1659 Words
Adam Smith, the author of ââ¬Å"The Wealth of Nationsâ⬠, was a Scottish moral philosopher during the Industrial Revolution who was inspired by his surroundings to write about the field of economics. Being a man of intellect on various types of philosophical views, Smith was able to portray his passionate feelings about political thought through his well-written works. While publishing his book, Smith became known as the ââ¬Å"father of modern economicsâ⬠. He was given this honorary title due to his strong determination of trying to understand how human nature impacts the social order. Smith was able to use several types of rhetoric styles, such as particular word choices and language, in order to captivate the attention of various types of readers. Byâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This reliance on assumption is demonstrative of Smithââ¬â¢s relationship between reason and sentiment. Whereas he uses reasoning to form sentiment, yet much of his sentiments stem from broad assumptions. The step from having some goods and needing others to trading with those who have the needed goods and want the overabundant ones cannot be understood or warranted without the presumption of a rational actor. Smith does not blatantly state this and on occasion refers to the development of capitalism as guided by an ââ¬Å"invisible hand.â⬠Yet, every development towards improved efficiency, if these are anything more guided than random evolutionary steps, require such an actor to instigate it. More so Smith is suggesting that human reason is the catalyst for trade. The ability to reason is the singular factor that allows for the development of a free market system. The divisions of labor must be controlled by a rational actor; such notions are arguably the mechanismsââ¬â¢ of ââ¬Å"self-loveâ⬠acts as an actor which drives the capitalist machinery. The example of the pin-maker illustrates this point. Lastly, Smith instills ââ¬Å"a certain propensity in human nature; the propensity to truck, barter, and exchange one thing for another.â⬠This, he suggests, may simply be an extension of reason. It is this final, and most specific, the penchant of human nature that ensures a vague sense ofShow MoreRelatedWealth Of Nations By Adam Smith1574 Words à |à 7 PagesIn his book, Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith makes arguments to support free-trade. Young Love and Relationships Free Essays
Young Love and Relationships Everybody feels love at one time or another, be it a love for a family member or a friend. Some people fall in and out of love on a regular basis while others take time to find just the right one. Everyone experiences this differently. We will write a custom essay sample on Young Love and Relationships or any similar topic only for you Order Now Love between two people is distinct and exceptional. Although being in love with someone is easy and free, love is still a powerful emotion that can build and destroy. Since majority of the youth in our society start with their first love and relationship at the age of thirteen, many are also fooled. Many confuse true love with infatuation. Although this is not entirely a bad thing, still many are often caught in sticky situations. (i. e. Pre-marital Sex, Teenage Pregnancy, Heartbreak, Suicide) Objectively, Webster says that the meaning of true love is aà sweetheart orà aà trulyà lovingà orà lovedà person. Furthermore more, Webster also defines relationships as an emotional and sexual association between two people. As for me, I believe that true love and relationships are the ones that God continuously give us. In 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 (NIV), it is said that ââ¬Å"Love is patient; love is kind. It does not envy; it does not boast; it is not proud. It is not rude; it is not self-seeking; it is not easily angered; it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight on evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects; always trusts; always hopes; always perseveres. â⬠True love is often confused with romantic love (infatuation) since both are all consuming and overwhelming, and if teenagers are not guided well, things can spiral out of hand. But when guided and founded with the will of God, years would go by as love develops into a real and secure emotional. The verse stated above shows what true love is really about. True love never asks for anything in return; it never gets tired of giving. But amidst all these, giving still has its boundaries. That is why everybody, mainly teens should know that unconditional love has nothing to do with sex, exploitation or subjugation. Right now, teenage girls around the world are getting pregnant because they thought having sex with their boyfriend proves love. But what did they get? Being left behind, an ounce of heartbreak and a baby to take care of at such a young age. Was getting their lives destroyed worth the few hours of pleasure in bed? I believe not. However, some are pressured into marriage as a sense of responsibility, but statistics show that although things may start like a fairytale, ninety percent of the teens that get married due to unplanned pregnancy get divorced or separated within a span of six years. You see, there is a right time for everything, for real love waits for that. Love never fails to forgive and it sacrifices for the other, but these sacrifices should have its limits ââ¬â one that would ensure that no one gets hurt. Shakespeare, one of the greatest playwright and love advocate, compared romantic love to being intoxicated in his play ââ¬Å"The Tempestâ⬠. Romantic love often clouds a personââ¬â¢s judgment causing him to be confused on what the right decisions should be. It is like drug or alcohol that it takes over all the personââ¬â¢s senses, somehow causing him to make many big decisions with all the wrong motives. Most of the time, lovers base their decisions on each other considering how they can be of help to each other. Together, they continuously grow emotionally and spiritually. Now, donââ¬â¢t get me wrong. There is a big difference between depending on each other for the better and not being able to live without the other. The latter is a mere infatuation or romantic love. For example, a person in a long term and serious relationship gets offered his dream job, but the job requires him to move to another country, thus leaving his partner behind. The person being left behind would probably force the other to stay and because romantic love can be really selfless, he would stay. And what if he chooses to leave? What would you do? Would you stop living your life just because the other chose to live his dreams? In real love, both should be encouraging each other to fulfill their dreams whether or not they do it side by side or far away from each other. Love can wait. If two people are meant for each other God will make a way because the will of God can never be broken. He will be the One opening doors for the two persons to meet. Arnel Pineda once sang a song with the lyrics ââ¬Å"too much love can kill youâ⬠, and indeed it can. In a relationship, be it just a fling or a serious one, we can never be sure if that relationship would last. We are never sure if the person we are with right now is the person we are going to be with in the next ten or twenty years. And when we love someone too much, we believe that we cannot live life without him. That is why losing him may cause us to stop living our lives. This is not real love. Just like an old saying being passed around for centuries, ââ¬Å"Too much of anything is bad. â⬠This proves that truly loving someone should never be too much because true love does not cause harm, but instead brings harmony. Furthermore, True love is selfless; infatuation is too much. Since romantic love is extremely selfless, a person may sacrifice everything and simply live his life for the other. This is wrong because any relationship is not exceptional from conflicts. And to top it all, we donââ¬â¢t know for sure if this person we are having a relationship with, is the one we would last with. That is why a relationship should have a strong foundation with God. It has to continuously grow according to Godââ¬â¢s commands and laws. We also have to be able to have something in our personal life to back us up. Something that would keep us busy if anything goes wrong with the relationship. i. e. Spiritual Lives, Family and Friends, School Organizations, Work)Loving and having relationships is really hard to understand. When our heart unites with another, we feel a strong connection being formed. But when the connection is cut without understanding, the results can be disastrous. (i. e. Suicide) These kinds of incidents can be avoided if we take time to reflect and slowly grow as wisdom and understanding comes. In our generation today, teens often rush into relationships without building a strong foundation to be able handle them. A heart without enough strength to handle the trials of a relationship is like standing on thin ice forcing it not to break. But no matter how hard we try to stop it from breaking, it will crack. That is why, love and relationships should not be rushed because there are many trials and situations that only time can face and overcome. Therefore, losing someone we love should not stop us from living because there is someone better, destined by the will of God, to be with us. Love comes with a lot of perks, but at the same time comes with great responsibility and understanding. There are numerous kinds of things a misguided love or relationship can cause, be it suicide, murder or pregnancy. These points must be taken into serious considerations to prevent people from committing the same mistakes over and over again. This is also for the youth to be more guided when it comes to loving and relationships because many young lives are at risk when it comes to an unguided relationship. That is why the youth should always be guided and must know all these responsibilities in order to have a good relationship, and of course, one that will develop to grow and last. Moreover, love is one of the most amazing feelings a person can feel if used in the right way. And in the end, love will always be a powerful force. Whether we let it work its magic or try to repress it, love is still and always will be an inevitable force that binds us all. Source: Dictionary meaning of true love. Believe and Succeed free essay sample
ââ¬Å"Up next the junior jumper, Tyler J,â⬠says the announcer. I start my approach. I think Iââ¬â¢m flying. Iââ¬â¢ve never felt so free. Itââ¬â¢s as if my life was bound for this. Then I come down. I hear a loud, but clear voice: ââ¬Å"22 feet 7 ? inches.â⬠I think Im dreaming. Did I, Tyler J, break the long jump record at my school? My grandma told me I would be good at track, but stubbornly, I never listened. Freshman year passed, and during sophomore year, I thought about track as my grandma texted me, reminding me track would be perfect fit. I thought about it, but I passed up the opportunity once again. Junior year was the year I went out for track. I felt comfortable with my new environment at school and I was sick of the consist nagging of my grandma. Track ended up being my strong suit, as I participated at conference in the 100 M, 200 M, high jump, and long jump. It was hard for me, but Coach Newman told me God has great things in store for me and I just need to realize what opportunity was in front of me. I didnââ¬â¢t know how to believe him, but I did. As I set up at the blocks for 100 M, I shut my eyes and took a deep breath. BOOM! The pop from the gun gets my feet going and running. ââ¬Å"Go, Tyler, go!â⬠The only thing Im hearing is that shriek from my coach and teammates. On the final stretch, Iââ¬â¢m at least two steps ahead of everyone. I received first place at 10.8 seconds. Long jump was next. Coach Newman congratulated me on my performance. My heart was at ease and I focused on my next event. I set up for my first jump. As I started my approach, I take off, I donââ¬â¢t want come down, but I did. I hear, ââ¬Å"17.8.â⬠And needed better. My coach talked to me as the other jumpers went. He said something Iââ¬â¢ll never forget: ââ¬Å"Tyler, just smile and it will be a beautiful day. Youââ¬â¢ll see.â⬠I didnââ¬â¢t understand him, but then it hit me. I donââ¬â¢t need to dwell on the things I lost. God has great things for meââ¬âeven if I donââ¬â¢t meet his standards or I do something wrong or I make mistakes. I can be great. At that moment, I get called up. Starting my second approach, I take off. ââ¬Å"18.6,â⬠says the announcer. Just be me, I tell myself. On my third approach, ââ¬Å"19.1,â⬠says the announcer. At that point, I was .3 off of the record of my high school. On my final approach, I ran as fast and as hard as I could. I take off. I launch myself and fall into the pit feet first and hurling forwards. Iââ¬â¢m waiting as they measure my distance. I hear, ââ¬Å"22.7 feet ? inches.â⬠My coach gives me a big hug. He tells me I did a great job. I did something only I could do for myself. I was being me. I still made a name for myself. I know what Iââ¬â¢m capable of and what I can accomplish. I donââ¬â¢t leave unhappy. I stick to what I want to succeed in. Even if I fail, itââ¬â¢s part of life and I understand that. My grandma knew something about me I didnââ¬â¢t yet know about myself. She knew if I tried at something you wonââ¬â¢t succeed at it, effort is key. I can do anything if I put work into it. And in almost breaking the school record, I did just that. I was myself, even if it isnââ¬â¢t as you wanted it to be.
